What the Saturn return is about

In astrology Saturn is the planet of structure, time, limits and maturity. When it returns to its birth position, the idea is that the structures you’ve built are tested: whatever isn’t really yours (the career chosen to please others, the relationship on autopilot) tends to crack, and whatever is solid gets built on.

The sign of your natal Saturn describes the lesson’s flavour (Saturn in Libra: fairness and commitment in partnerships; Saturn in Capricorn: ambition and authority) and the house shows the life area. Find both in your birth chart.

Why late twenties?

Saturn’s sidereal period is 29.46 years (NASA planetary fact sheet). Because the Earth’s own motion makes Saturn loop backwards each year, the exact crossings bunch into one to three hits spread over up to a year, and Saturn stays within a few degrees for roughly two to three years, the “return period” astrologers talk about.

Questions people ask

What is a Saturn return?

The period when Saturn comes back to the exact zodiac position it held at your birth. Saturn takes about 29.5 years to orbit the Sun, so the first return arrives around age 27–30, the second around 56–60 and the third around 85–89.

Why does my Saturn return have several dates?

Because Saturn goes retrograde for about 4½ months every year, it often crosses your natal degree three times: forward, backward, then forward again. The whole period, when Saturn is within a few degrees, lasts roughly two to three years.

What happens during a Saturn return?

Astrologers associate it with growing up: taking stock, committing to or leaving careers and relationships, and taking responsibility for your life. The house Saturn occupies in your chart shows which area is most in focus.

Do I need my birth time?

No. Saturn moves about 2 minutes of arc per hour, so the date is enough for the return dates. A time adds the house.
