Rising sign calculator
Find your Ascendant: the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth minute. Time zone and daylight saving are handled for you.
Why your rising sign needs a birth time
The Earth spins once a day, so the whole zodiac wheels past your eastern horizon every 24 hours. Whatever sign is crossing that horizon (the cyan line) at your birth minute is your rising sign. Drag the clock.
Cancer rising 18°00′
How long each sign spends rising at 40°N. Near the equator it’s about 2 hours each; further from it some signs rise in under an hour and others take over three (“signs of short and long ascension”).
What your rising sign means
If your Sun sign is who you are and your Moon sign is what you need, your rising sign is how you show up: the manner, pace and style people notice before they know you. Astrologers also read the Ascendant as your body and vitality, and as the lens you meet every new situation through.
Because it sets the first house, the rising sign decides which sign rules every other house. A Scorpio rising, for example, has Sagittarius on the 2nd house of money and Taurus on the 7th house of partnership. That’s why a correct birth time changes so much of a reading.
Ascendant ruler
The planet that rules your rising sign is called the chart ruler. Look it up in your full birth chart: its sign and house show where your energy naturally goes. Libra rising? Find Venus. Capricorn rising? Find Saturn.

Questions people ask
What is my rising sign?
Your rising sign (Ascendant) is the zodiac sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the minute and place you were born. Enter your birth date, exact time and city above to find it.
Can I find my rising sign without a birth time?
Not reliably. The rising sign changes roughly every two hours (faster or slower depending on latitude), so any of about 12 signs is possible across one day. Birth certificates, hospital records or baby books usually give the time.
How accurate does my birth time need to be?
Within 10–15 minutes is usually enough unless your Ascendant is within a couple of degrees of a sign boundary, which the calculator flags. Each degree of the Ascendant takes roughly 4 minutes to rise.
Rising sign vs ascendant: what’s the difference?
Nothing. The Ascendant is the exact degree on the eastern horizon; the sign it falls in is your rising sign. It also marks the start of the 1st house.
Why do people say the rising sign is about first impressions?
In astrology the Ascendant is the “front door” of the chart: your instinctive style, appearance and approach to new situations. It also sets up every house, so it shapes the whole chart layout.
